The USS Defiant (NX-74205) was the prototype of the Defiant-class escort and saw service with the Federation Starfleet from 2371 to 2375 when it was destroyed during the Second Battle of Chin'toka. In early 2375, Commander Gotens took a misunderstood, unsanctioned command of the Defiant just before Deep Space 9 came under surprise Jem'Hadar attack. He was apprehended by Captain Aeris, and after the battle, was delivered to Captain Sisko. Empathetic to the situation, Sisko decided to overlook the infraction. ("Home, Part I")
