USS Endeavour (NCC-1716) was a Constitution-class heavy cruiser — initially of the Bonhomme Richard-subclass — on active duty in Starfleet during the late 23rd and early 24th centuries. (Star Fleet Technical Manual)
After a refit, the upgrades were sufficient that Starfleet deemed it the lead ship and prototype of the Endeavour-subclass of heavy cruisers. (Ships of the Star Fleet)
In 2291, Endeavour and USS Hood were tasked to perform detailed spectrographic planetary analysis and star charting the Beta Quadrant while avoiding contact with sentient lifeforms. Data collected from the two ships, as well as three others running different sorts of probe missions, were the basis of the general exploratory missions undertaken a few years later.
