(Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: The Animated Series, Star Trek: New Voyages)

History

The Enterprise was launched in 2245 under the command of Captain Robert April. It was the first of 12 Constitution-class vessels. After April came Christopher Pike, the longest single-term captain in the history of the ship/

Command eventually passed to James T. Kirk in early 2264, after Pike was promoted to fleet captain. Kirk became the most highly decorated captain in Starfleet history, and commanded the Enterprise during her historic 5-year mission. The ship engaged in several historical battles, made over 20 first contacts, and defeated several threats to the existence of the United Federation of Planets.

After the five-year mission ended in 2270, Kirk was promoted to rear admiral and made Chief of Starfleet Operations. The ship underwent a 18 month refit, which drastically upgraded or completely overhauled almost every system. Only the main structure of the saucer and the basic frame of the engineering hull survived the refit, with everything else being completely new. Kirk then re-took command to deal with V'Ger, a space probe that threatened the existence of Earth. V'Ger was eventually dealt with.

In 2285, Kirk boarded his old ship again for a cadet-training cruise. Enterprise then dealt with Khan, who had stolen the Genesis Device, a secret terraforming project funded by Starfleet. Khan wanted revenge on Kirk for the death of his wife. Kirk was able to defeat Khan, but Spock lost his life in the process.

Kirk, with the aid of his senior staff, stole Enterprise from space-dock, intending to obtain Spock's body, which had been left on the newly formed Genesis Planet, and to re-unite it with his katra, which was in Dr. McCoy's mind. A Klingon vessel, out for the secrets of the "Genesis torpedo", disabled Enterprise, and Kirk was forced to set the auto-destruct to prevent the ship from falling into Klingon hands.
