The USS Essex (NCC-173) was a Daedalus-class Federation starship in service in the late 22nd century. (TNG: "Power Play") The vessel was originally conceived as the UES Essex (CLM-150) under the auspices of United Earth's Starfleet. (The Starfleet Museum)
Along with the starships Archon, Carolina and Intrepid, it participated in war games exercises against Enterprise (NX-01) in 2156. Later, Essex, under the command of Captain Bryce Shumar, would be among the ships battling Romulan forces near Berengaria VII. (ENT novel: The Romulan War: Beneath the Raptor's Wing)
In different realities, Essex has had various different designations.
