The USS Excelsior (NCC-77246) was a Federation dreadnought of the Galaxy III-class. It is capable of supporting a crew complement of approximately 1200. Due to wartime personnel needs, Excelsior's current crew complement is approximately 700, and families have been relocated to Deep Space 12. (Star Trek: Hidden Frontier)

After the Dominion War, Excelsior was commanded first by Captain Ian Quincy Knapp, then Captain Elizabeth Shelby. (Star Trek: Hidden Frontier)

In 2384 the Excelsior underwent refit into the newer Galaxy IV-class dreadnought prior to Operation Beta Shield. (Star Trek: Operation Beta Shield)

The Star Trek: Hidden Frontier continuity is a divergent one from the continuity of Peter David's Star Trek: New Frontier series of novels published by Pocket Books, where Shelby's career is different.

Alternate timeline[]

In an alternate timeline, USS Excelsior — commanded by Captain Hikaru Sulu — disappeared into a temporal rift while en route to Khitomer in 2293. The assassination attempt on the Federation President, Ra-Ghoratreii, was successful and the Federation retaliated by obliterating the Klingon race.

In this alternate timeline, the Galaxy-class dreadnought Excelsior was commanded by Ian Quincy Knapp's twin brother, John Knapp.

As punishment, the Q Continuum inflicted the Borg upon the races of the Alpha Quadrant. The crew of the 24th century Excelsior aided Sulu's Excelsior in going back to 2293, thus repairing the timeline. (HF: "Yesterday's Excelsior")

New Order continuity[]

At the time of its construction, the Excelsior was to be the last Galaxy-class vessel to be commissioned and the first to be refitted to Galaxy III specs. However, due to recent combat losses, Starfleet command would soon order another run of at least fifteen vessels, this run consisting of five more Galaxy III-class variants, five USS Venture subtypes, three standard Galaxy class ships and two additional space control ships of the USS Beliskner subtype.
