USS Henri Dunant (NCC-23912) was a Federation hospital ship on active duty in Starfleet during at least the 2370s. Henri Dunant and her sister ship, USS Vindicator were originally constructed as Olympus-class dreadnoughts then refitted as hospital ships. The two ships were referred to as "mednoughts." (The Mighty Mednoughts) The Mednoughts took the idea of a dreadnought — an overpowered and massive on-the-offense starship — and transformed it into a workable non-offensive operation. The center nacelle provided extra power for weapons and medical needs as well as providing warp propulsion for the saucer when mission needs demanded the saucer disengage from the secondary hull.

Henri Dunant — commanded, in order of succession, by Captains Ann Dysinger, Ken Dysinger, Dave Pitts, and Jim Douglas — was deployed to the Starfleet Sixteenth Fleet. (Starfleet International: Starfleet Communiqué 74 (April-May, 1996))

Nomenclature

The ship was named after Jean Henri Dunant (1828-1910), a Swiss businessman who was a founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross and a Nobel Peace Prize winner. Some of Dunant's ideas were the basis for the 1864 Geneva Convention.
