Mission history[]

She was commissioned on Stardate 29426 as the USS Jaap Penraat.

The ship’s first engagement was in 2353. The Steamrunner unsuccessfully defended a Starbase against the Tholians.

She made first contact with the Mordanites and the Kressari.

Then, she served in the Federation-Cardassian War, the Second Federation-Tzenkethi War, and patrolled along the Tzenkethi border during the Dominion War.

In late October of 2376, Rear Admiral Kyle Raymond gave command of the ship to Sintina Aurelia. The remaining crew of the former USS Independence received special dispensation from Starfleet Operations to rename the Jaap Penraat to Independence.

The new crew, in homage to the officer that saved the crew of the former Independence, named the lounge "Jinal's." (Star Trek: Independence: "The Expropriation")

The first mission under Captain Aurelia was to return D'nas to Tamaria. Near the end of their three-month journey, the ship stumbled upon a rogue planet populated by sentient robots. (Star Trek: Independence: "Machines of War")
