The USS J.D. Putnam, sometimes called just the Putnam, was a Danube-class runabout assigned to the USS Black Hawk. It was formerly the Shiloh, attached to the USS Alacrity as shuttle number NCC-1881/04, and assigned to Commander Jeffery Higdon as a scientific research vessel in 2372. Later it was transferred to the USS Shiloh and renamed the Putnam in 2373.

The Putnam is named after Private John D. Putnam, a soldier of Co. F, 14th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, who died during the Battle of Shiloh during the American Civil War. Private Putnam has the unique honor of having a monument, a tree stump, made in his honor and still in existence in the 24th century. (Star Trek: Black Hawk)
