A Starfleet destroyer is a swift, powerful, cost effective starship used for patrols, surveillance and Federation defense. The primary mission of a Saladin-class destroyer is extended patrol duty along various treaty zones. During military operations the destroyer is used for both assault and perimeter defense for the larger capital ships. The Saladins are often used to escort ships through troubled regions.

Construction

There is much to know about how this Saladin-class destroyer and how she came about. Saladin class destroyers have followed a tradition of naming older than the Federation itself. Following along the lines of the past Saladin destroyers hull number 556 would be named after a person who excelled in the martial field and become a hero to some and a scourge to others.

Major Elena Mendenhall Justice is well known with cadets who have studied the Battle of Omicron Canaris in 2255. She was the officer in charge of the 17th Marine Expeditionary Unit stationed aboard the dreadnought USS Amaterasu (2250-55). This woman who was born as Elena Mendenhall Winston at Novaya Vladivostok, Deneva to the planetary Governor Charles David Winston (2245-2262) took her mother’s maiden name when she was 13 and emancipated herself to evade the influence of her father’s family name. Like most starry eyed adolence enrolled in Starfleet and graduated in 2236.

Graduated from SFA and the SFMC her first assignment as an officer found her assigned to 136th Marine Strike Group, aboard the Baton Rouge-class USS Arcturus (2236-46). Arcturus was lead ship of Confrontation Group Alpha during Battle of Donatu V between UFP and Klingon forces (2242)

1st Lt.-Captain - Assigned to 8th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), Larson-class USS Corregidor (2246-48).

Captain-Major - Executive Officer, 11th MEU, Larson-class USS Thermopylae (2248-50).

Major - Officer In Charge, 17th MEU, dreadnought USS Amaterasu (2250-55).

Died during Battle of Omicron Canaris, 2255, in which the 17th MEU engaged ground and space forces of the Klingon Empire. In her honor, the Larson-class was to be named after her, but was cancelled to do budget constraints. The name was then suggested in the mid 2290's for a group of Saladin-class destroyers currently on hold awaiting completion.

That is where the name, which is very important to any vessel, was derived from. The actual construction of the starship was almost a colorful event as Major Justice’s career.

On Stardate 9306.12, a key personnel databases crashed at Starfleet Headquarters placing several qualified officers onto the inactive duty rosters. Shortly after the computer glitch several officers approached Captain Tunis and offered their help to fill out a new command slot opening up in one of the new Saladin-class destroyers.

Six months later Starfleet was gripped by cost over runs at all shipyards which were forced to have ceased construction. Thirteen ships were presently sitting in spacedocks around the Federation with no new crews to man them.

Finally on Stardate 9403.26, Starfleet notified Captain Tunis that the Saladin-class destroyer USS Justice, NCC-556, would be ready for a crew in approximately nine months from now.

During these nine months, the Starfleet Marine Corps was looking for a spot to place one of their crack Intelligence units. They needed a platform that could deliver covert operatives quickly to trouble spots around the Federation and found that the spaceframe of a Saladin was the ticket. Time was spent converting cargo areas into highly classified work areas and office space. Even one of the standard shuttlecraft were adapted for special uses by the now assigned marine detachment known as the 86th.

Due do heightened tensions between the Federation and the Klingon Empire, construction was sped up on all starships and the Justice was completed on Stardate 9412.23. Captain Tunis gave his new crew four weeks notice before their shake down cruise.

On Stardate 9501.29 the Justice left Spacedock for her trial runs. Her first five year mission going as smoothly as any ship in Starfleet.

Current status

The USS Justice is currently on patrol near the Romulan Neutral Zone under the command of an Efrosian Captain.
