USS Magellanic Clouds (NCC-2005) (informally referred to as USS Magellan) was one of the three Draco-class galactic survey cruisers launched in the 2270s and 2280s.
Captain Mandala Flynn, a former officer of the USS Enterprise under James T. Kirk, commanded Magellanic Clouds. The ship's mission objective was to explore the Greater Magellanic Cloud dwarf galaxy, 160,000 light years away. (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock; Hobbyist's Guide to the UFP Starfleet and Its History, Part 1b)
As the Magellanic Clouds was being prepared for launch, circa 2270, several Starfleet Academy cadets, including Brian Silayna and Piper, expected to be assigned to Captain Flynn's crew. (Star Trek: The Original Series novel: Dreadnought!
About 2291, while her sister ship USS Draco sent back a report from its halfway mark, Magellanic Clouds did not. Analysis of the subspace relays along which such a report would be sent seemed to indicate that the ship was lost with all hands, while in sight of its destination.
