USS Monson (NCC-2392) was a Chandley-class heavy frigate on active duty in Starfleet during the late 23rd century. The initial bloc of these ships were commissioned in the 2270s.
A few years (ca. 2273) after commissioning, Monson was overtaken by four Klingon K-23-class destroyers in the Triangle. A contingent of Starfleet Marines boarded a captured Klingon ship that self-destructed — killing two marine platoons and the entire crew of the Klingon ship.
Because of this incident, Starfleet policy was enacted that stated that, before the boarding of any threat vessel, a complete scan must be made to ascertain if destruct systems are still operational. (FASA RPG: Federation Ship Recognition Manual)
