The USS Montana (NCC-1786) was a Trieste-class Federation starship in service during the 23rd century, under the command of Captain Paul Edwards.
In 2281, the Montana responded to a distress call from the Yeager Outpost in the Epsilon sector, reportedly under attack from Klingon forces. When the Montana arrived, they discovered that it was Romulans, not Klingons attacking the colony. After an engagement with the Romulan vessel, the Montana disappeared through a temporal anomaly. Her fate remained unsolved for seventy-two years.
The Montana reemerged from her temporal displacement in 2353, and was soon returned to active service. (Star Trek: The Continuing Mission: "Ghost Ship")
