The USS Odyssey (NCC-71832) was a Galaxy-class large exploration cruiser on active duty in Starfleet for about five years, beginning in late 2364 or sometime in 2365. Odyssey was destroyed in 2370.

It was the fourth scheduled Galaxy-class explorer scheduled for commissioning, after USS Galaxy, USS Enterprise-D and USS Yamato. Had Captain Thomas Halloway (who was scheduled to take command of Enterprise-D) not retired, Jean-Luc Picard would have taken command of Odyssey. (TNG novel: The Buried Age)

In late 2370, the Odyssey was under the command of Captain Declan Keogh while docked at Deep Space 9, having returned from a patrol of the Cardassian border.

Following the kidnapping of Commander Benjamin Sisko by the Dominion, the vessel was ordered into the Gamma Quadrant to retrieve him. Although the rescue attempt was successful, the Odyssey was engaged by three Jem'Hadar fighters. Her defenses were ineffective against the Jem'Hadar's phased polaron beams, and she took significant damage. The Odyssey was destroyed when a Jem'Hadar fighter rammed her secondary hull as she tried to escape. All hands were lost. (DS9: "The Jem'Hadar")

Nomenclature[]

The ship was named after the Odyssey, one of two epic poems (circa 8th century, B.C.E.) attributed to Homer, on Earth, as well as other sea- and starfaring vessels, usually of Earth registry.
