The USS Potemkin (NCC-1711) was a Constitution-class heavy cruiser in Federation Starfleet service during the 23rd century, one of the initial block of that class launched starting in 2245. She was constructed at the San Francisco Naval Yards. The motto on her dedication plaque was "For a spoonful of Borscht."

In 2268, Potemkin took part in the disastrous M-5 war games. (TOS: "The Ultimate Computer")
Sarah Madison became the first woman to command a Constitution-class starship, in 2269. That ship was the Potemkin. (Orion Press: "The Curtained Sleep")
In 2285, during the Kelvan War, Potemkin was one of the Starfleet assets of Task Force One, but was one of the only ships to survive until the arrival of Task Force Six. (Orion Press: In Harm's Way)
In 2287, Potemkin was uprated to the Constitution (III) configuration.
Captain Alec Grigory became Potemkin 's commanding officer in 2289, and continued in that role until 2299.
- Some sources have 2290 as the starting date for his command. The trailer for "The Castaway" (2022) notes that Grigory began a five-year mission as Potemkin's CO in 2296. This seems to be his second full five-year mission.
Potemkin conducted a scientific survey near Klingon space in 2293, around the time of the Khitomer Accords. (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country)
In 2296, the Potemkin investigated a mysterious disappearance of three Federation vessels when Klingons arrived in the sector. Working together with Klingon Commander Kumaonna, the Federation and Klingon ships were able to repair the anomaly, even at the cost of one of Kumaonna's ships. ("The Void")

The Potemkin encountered two worlds whose inhabitants had been transplanted by the Preservers, Sumaya ("The Night the Stars Fell from the Sky") and Delta-1 Gruis III. ("Ashes")
After Potemkin's bridge module was replaced with one for a Constellation-class cruiser (none for a Constitution (III)-configuration heavy cruiser were available), the command chair from the early years of the Potemkin was used in the new bridge. ("The Chair")
The ship was destroyed in 2299 in a battle with the Romulans, though many of the officers and crew were able to escape using transporters and escape pods. ("Destinies") Several of its surviving officers transferred to other vessels, including the Constellation-class cruiser USS Tristan (Project Potemkin: "Room Service"; Starship Tristan) and the Phobos-class cruiser USS Deimos (Starship Deimos).

In November 2293, Potemkin was ordered to the planet Ardalas to contact leaders opposed to a recent military coup. A Potemkin landing party, including then-Lieutenant Junior Grade Matthew Rielly, was captured and the opposition leader inadvertently killed. The status quo of the planetary government was restored.
