The USS Republic (NCC-1371) was a Constitution-class starship in Starfleet service from the mid-23rd through the late 24th centuries.

Assignment patch[]

Before the 2270s Fleetwide adoption of the Enterprise delta shield as an insignia, the assignment patch for Republic was a rhombus -- within which would be the Command, Sciences, or Operations symbols in black; or the Medicine symbol in red. Alternative continuities[]

Assorted[]

23rd century[]

Then-Lieutenant Garth of Izar was assigned as Republic's security chief in 2229. (Star Trek is...: "The Next Cage")

Two Treknology sources — Heavy Cruiser Evolution Plans and Ships of the Star Fleet — posit that Republic had been refit from an Archon-class vessel, which may explain why it was extant before the launch of Constitution in the 2240s.
Republic has also been depicted as a Baton Rouge-class vessel, with a registry of NCC-1378. (Star Trek: The Original Series comic The Enterprise Murder Case!)

The Republic participated in the Axanar Peace Mission in 2251 under the command of Captain Rollin Bannock. (TOS novel: My Brother's Keeper: Republic)

In 2254, James T. Kirk served with his friend Ben Finney aboard the Republic with the rank of ensign. On duty, Finney left a circuit open to the atomic matter piles by accident: an event Kirk reported in his log, causing Finney not to be promoted. (TOS: "Court Martial")

My Brother's Keeper: Republic has this incident taking place three years earlier, during Kirk's first year at Starfleet Academy.

Ensign Polim n'Ahman's first deep-space assignment was aboard the Republic in 2256. (Project Potemkin Crew Bios)

In 2265, the Republic was involved in a confrontation with Klingon forces in the Argalus Indri system where it defeated three Klingon cruisers. (Ship Recognition Manual, Volume 4: Starships of the Original Series Era)

In 2275, the ship received a refit. (Ship Recognition Manual, Volume 4: Starships of the Original Series Era)

Republic resolved the threat of piracy by Orion raiders in the Volus Corridor and later deterred Klingon border incursions along the Neutral Zone in 2287. (Decipher ST:RPG Starships)

When Operation Retrieve was proposed in 2293, the Republic was patrolling the Klingon Neutral Zone. (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country)

In 2294, the Republic was decommissioned. (Ship Recognition Manual, Volume 4: Starships of the Original Series Era)

24th century[]

USS Republic patch.

The Republic was used as a Starfleet Academy cadet training vessel well into the 24th century. As of 2374, the ship hadn't left the Sol system since the 2330s. (DS9: "Valiant")

The Republic was unable to assist the USS Enterprise-D during the Borg attack on Earth in 2367, or with the task force sent to recover survivors at Wolf 359, as she was undergoing a refit at Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards during this time. (Star Trek: The Prospect Chronicles: "The Burnt Child")

During the USS Cantabrian's battle with Samantha Delaney and her Dark Starship, the Republic was again at Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards for routine maintenance and in no state to assist defending Earth. (Star Trek: The Cantabrian Expeditions: "By All Means Necessary")

We also assume Elizabeth Singh, during one of her stints teaching at Starfleet Academy, served as an instructor aboard the ship, due to her saying the ship seemed to always be in drydock for one thing or another.

In 2376, the Republic participated in the Battle of Sol against the Vendoth. (Star Trek: Unity: "United We Stand - Together")

Archon 3-ortho

The Archon subclass of the Horizon class battle cruiser

USS Republic (NCC-1371) was commissioned as an Archon heavy cruiser (subclass to the Horizon class) in 2222, but suffered an unfortunate and damaging fire in her bow section shortly thereafter. She, like the USS Constellation (NCC-1071), was taken offline for repairs, and eventually transferred to Chiokis for engineering tests for Project Starship.

Ex-Republic was brought into the refit yards as a final examination of the feasibility of converting other Horizons to the new heavy cruiser specifications. She had been inactive since the fire in 2222 and floating lifeless without the forward command saucer and mounting structure. The yard completely stripped what remained of her internal spaces and a dilithium-regulated antimatter reactor (similar to that of her sister) was embedded in her newly-redesigned engineering spaces. The yard workers leveled off the upper slope of the secondary hull, placing a domed structure in its place—ribbed for added stress tolerance—with a limited-capacity shuttlebay immediately aft of amidships. Pylons supporting PB-31s were gamma-welded into the tested configuration for maximal warp efficiency and a pre-manufactured custom saucer, with a less extensive interconnecting dorsal (in comparison to the Constellation) mated in the upper forward position. The profile now suggested her Horizon origin just slightly.

In 2238, she began her flight tests, unarmed but well defended with a conformal forcefield and a large deflector dish forward of the secondary hull. Astern, the subspace displacement monitor array relayed the detected warp field results not just to engineering consoles within Republic, but also to the trailing starship and the operations office back at the yard. In this configuration, she measured 265.2 meters long, 114.1 on the beam, and a height of 68.3, massing 599,100 metric tons. As with Constellation, she carried 2 light shuttles, 2 shuttlepods, and 1 work pod in her limited shuttlebay.

USS Republic (NCC-1371) serves as a less-detailed training ship for the oncoming and prestigious heavy cruiser crews.

Of the two testbed vessels for Project Starship, Republic was chosen by the director, Captain Robert April, to be not converted to the new Constitution production standard, but rapidly completed to serve as a training vessel for the crews of the forthcoming ships. Recommissioned in May of 2245, she initially served in a defensive role in the vicinity of the Sol system so that her own crew could become intimately familiar with the expected capabilities of the new heavy cruisers. As the Farragut neared completion, Republic transitioned to her training assignment, taking Star Fleet’s best teams of command, engineering, science, medical, and operations personnel on three- and four-month familiarization cruises, demonstrating the advanced functions of the bridge, the superiority in maneuvering and speed, and—very importantly—the operational and maintenance procedures for the newest in dilithium-regulated antimatter annihilation drives. She was mothballed in 2257 instead of upgraded to the predominant Constitution Flight II and Bonhomme Richard standards as a compromise to justify the authorization of another newbuild.

Academy training ship USS Republic (NCC-1371)

Originally commissioned in 2222 and de-commissioned in 2257, Republic only had 14 years of warp travel in her logs, because she was seen as both too old and too unique to warrant the extensive and costly upgrades of the Constitution standards. However, she was called again to service in 2285, when Star Fleet Academy’s training vessel, USS Enterprise, was lost to enemy action in the Mutara sector. Without a ready and prepared vessel for the training and education role, it was decided to re-commission USS Republic. Because of the limited timeframe to get her operational again and provide Academy cadets the necessary space hours for their graduation, she was not equipped with modern weaponry. Instead, all combat exercises would be computer simulated, with the one ceremonial exception of an original 4.0-gigawatt laser emitter that was moved laterally to the centerline, embedded in the location of the original photon torpedo launcher. The Academy logo was emblazoned on her dorsal hull and school shuttle pilots made it a matter of course that the cadets’ first beauty passes of the ship was one of that visage, as they made their arrival approaches. While she served for only four years as the Academy’s training vessel, before being relieved by a series of far more modern starships, USS Republic (known affectionately and humorously as “the Pub”) was often spoken of fondly by members of the seven classes that got underway with her. In 2267, during a wargames exercise, Republic (under command of Commodore Jonathan Keller) fired on USS Lexington with phasers at 1/10th power instead of 1/100th power. Keller was given the choice of court martial or retirement from Starfleet. He chose the latter. (Orion Press: "The Price of Peace")

During the Kelvan War in 2285, Republic was part of Task Force Four. It was one of the first ships rescued by Task Force Six. (Orion Press: In Harm's Way)

There have been at least two Starfleet International chapters using the Constitution-class USS Republic as its fictional metaphor. In 1999, the first Republic joined with members of the USS MacLeod to form Chattahoochee Station. (Communiqué 91) Another was founded 08 April 2011 and based in Atlanta, Georgia. (STARFLEET Vessel Registry, May 2011) It is still extant in 2021. Its longtime chapter president is Eric L. Watts.
