The ship was named after Robert E. Lee (1807–1870), the commanding general of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War; the George Washington-class fleet ballistic missile submarine USS Robert E. Lee (SSBN-601) in service from 1958-83; and previous spacegoing vessels.

Robert E. Lee was a chapter of Starfleet International based in Swedesboro, New Jersey. It changed its fictional metaphor from that of a Defiant-class escort with a registry of NCC-74225 to that of an Avenger-class heavy frigate in January, 2012. The club changed its name to the USS Invincible and became a correspondence chapter of Starfleet International based in Marcy, New York.
