The USS Sally Ride flying through the Shackleton Expanse
The USS Sally Ride (NCC-74710) was an Intrepid-class Federation starship that entered service in 2371. She was the third ship of her class to be launched. Under the command of Captain Rafael Martinez, her primary mission profile was as a science vessel. (Shield of Tomorrow: "The Pull, Part 1", "Becomes the Lion")
The ship was a "pet project" of Admiral Norwell Nash, who wanted to make sure Starfleet maintained its focus on science and exploration even in the face of the looming Dominion threat. After the Leyton Affair in mid-2372, Admiral Nash assigned the Sally Ride to a six-month exploratory mission of the Shackleton Expanse in order to remove the ship from the potential theatre of war. Shortly after the cease-fire between the Federation and the Klingon Empire in early 2373, the Sally Ride, along with Narendra Station, the USS Dauntless, and a Romulan warbird, were trapped in a temporal anomaly that held them in temporal stasis for roughly eighteen months. They emerged in 2374, suddenly finding themselves in the middle of the Dominion War, shortly after the fall of Betazed. The Dauntless was recalled to the front lines, but the Sally Ride remained on station in the Shackleton Expanse. (SOT: "The Battle of Narendra Station", "The Madwoman In a Box", "A Galaxy on Fire")
By the 2410s, the Sally Ride was commanded by Captain T'Lan, and assigned by Admiral Campbell to assist operations in the Narendra sector. (Star Trek Online)

The ship was named after Sally Ride (1951-2012), the first female American astronaut.
