USS Schirra (NCC-699) was a Oberth-class science scout on active duty in Starfleet during the late 23rd century.
After Schirra was destroyed by a Klingon attack, Starfleet made the decision to retrofit all vessels of the same class with photon torpedo bays. While the Federation media criticized the decision, Admiral Cartwright stood firm on his decision. (Orion Press: "Return to Xantharus")
