The Shoemaker was named after Eugene Merle Shoemaker, a planetary scientist from 20th century Earth.
In 2381, the Shoemaker was in orbit of Andres Rae while Captain Benjamin Kelsoe, Commander Connor Burt, and Commander Braxis where attacked by So'ja operatives while exploring the ruins of Andres Rae. The crew of the Shoemaker assisted Kelsoe, Burt, and Braxis and then transported the rest of the crew of the USS Pioneer, who were on leave, back to Deep Space Five. ("Almost Paradise")
