Nomenclature[]
The ship was named after the SS Southern Cross (1886) (formerly a whaling vessel, the Pollux), a steam-powered Norwegian sea vessel that was the lead ship of an expedition commanded by Carsten Borchgrevink. During Earth's late 19th century, the Southern Cross Expedition was the first to over-winter on mainland Antarctica, the first to visit the Ross Ice Shelf (then known as the Great Ice Barrier), and the first to land on the Barrier's surface.
