The Yorktown was named after the Siege of Yorktown (1781), the last major battle of the American Revolutionary War, on Earth during its 18th century.

There was a South Carolina chapter of Starfleet International named USS Yorktown that was established in the 1980s. (Starfleet Communiqué 20) By 1996, it had changed its fictional metaphor and registry and was based in York, South Carolina. Its chapter president throughout most of the 1990s was Marlon Ragsdale.
