The Romulan rank of Uhlan is approximately equivalent to Starfleet Crewman. The same rank is used by both the Romulan Star Navy and the Tal Shiar, although the latter uses the term uhlan to designate a graduate from the Tal Shiar academy. The TS equivalent to a RSN uhlan is a first-year cadet.
The Romulan Star Navy referred to uhlans as "redshirts" due to their wine-red uniforms while in service. (RIS Bouteina: "No Child Left Untested")
