The United Federation Starfleet is a roleplaying and fan club that is held within the virtual world of second life, they have a sim that is called Sector 001 and engage in many roleplaying events weekly and even daily, with hundreds of members there are many friends made within the group and you are almost bound to be entertained and find a fun and enjoyable experience within the UFS.

United Federation Starfleet is a Star Trek Fan Club that meets in Second Life®. Our Primary mission is to boldly live our lives following the ideals, philosophy and spirit of Starfleet and Gene Roddenberry.<br\>

United Federation Starfleet was founded on Stardate 071202, evolving from the group SL STARFLEET.
What does being a United Federation Starfleet Member mean then? It means that, in addition to being able to wear a unique and cool uniform everyday (although virtual, they are still pretty cool!), and being able to interact with friends and fellow officers on a daily basis, we can actually experience what Starfleet is all about.
United Federation Starfleet was founded by Michael Vermoesen - aka Admiral Mike Calhoun - and is a group of Second Life users with a common passion - Star Trek. The group was created to bring people together, from every corner of the world, and then enable them to interact with each other and “live the dream” of being part of the Star Trek universe.
United Federation Starfleet is located at Sector001, a SIM (short for SIMulator, otherwise known as an “island” in Second Life) where its members take advantage of a carefully and elegantly constructed "Trek-themed playground" in which to “live the dream”.
United Federation Starfleet members can enjoy a myriad of facilities including futuristic condo housing, a sandbox, two space stations named Tranquility and Athena, quarters aboard those stations, an officer's lounge, a shopping mall, a recreational beach, quiet parkland and so much more.

Second Life
Second Life is a massive multiplayer online game that is free to sign up to. Within the virtual world you can buy, with money bought from Linden Labs or that earned in world, various objects, gadgets, vehicles, outfits and more, the world is almost completely user created and maintained. Sector001
The UFS Story
In 2371, whilst in pursuit of the Maquis raider Val Jean the USS Voyager was thrown 75,000 light years into the Delta Quadrant by the entity known as the Caretaker. In 2378 The USS Voyager concluded its seven-year odyssey through the Delta Quadrant by using a Borg transwarp conduit to return to the Alpha Quadrant. The ships return was aided by technology brought from the future by Kathryn Janeway from the year 2404.
The Federation Council and Starfleet Command immediately started detailed analyses of Voyagers database and sensor logs to find out as much about the Delta Quadrant as possible. Whilst the destruction of the Borg Unicomplex was fantastic, Starfleet Command felt the threat that the Borg still potentially posed was too great to ignore.
Starfleet Command realised that due to the distances involved they could never adequately support fleet operations in the Delta Quadrant, so feasibility studies for a permanent Federation colony in the Delta Quadrant began in earnest.
During 2379, the entire Romulan Senate was assassinated in a coup by Shinzon of Remus. Whilst he was soon deposed, the Empire was left in complete disarray. The Federation began attempts to mediate power-sharing talks between the numerous Romulan and Reman factions, until an agreement was eventually reached whereby Remus was made a protectorate of the Klingon Empire and the Reman people allowed to settle on a Romulan continent.
The Federation also began providing material and humanitarian aide to the devastated Romulan Star Empire, and attempted to facilitate negotiations for the re-establishment of a permanent government. Starfleet Vessels routinely patrolled the Neutral Zone and the Star Empire. Not only did Starfleet see this as a tactical necessity, it also provided the opportunity for a new dawn of exploration, which had been virtually stagnant for the previous 12 years.
Exploring the unknown expanse of the Star Empire provided Starfleet with a much needed excuse to expand its fleet beyond what it had been prior to the Dominion War. Starfleet wanted to be prepared in case the Dominion decided to attack the Alpha Quadrant again.
During routing patrols on the edge of the Romulan Border near to Khittomer, the USS Wraith, an experimental scout ship, detected an anomaly which turned out to be an intermittent wormhole.
Months of intensive scientific study discovered the wormhole spawned at random anywhere within a 20,000 light year radius. Ongoing scientific studies resulted in being able to predict where and when the wormhole would next appear. Whilst it opened randomly this side, the far side remained at a stable, permanent location in the Delta Quadrant. However, once the wormhole closed, the length of time before it opened again got greater each time.
By mid 2380, Starfleet Command concluded that opportunities for future travel between the Alpha Quadrant and Delta Quadrant via this wormhole would become more and more limited as time progressed. This meant that any Federation colony in the Delta Quadrant would need to be totally self sufficient and unable to rely on support from the Alpha Quadrant
Starfleet Command identified the Pinastri Star System in the Nekrit Expanse region of the Delta Quadrant as the perfect home for a Federation colony. The region was close to the site of the Borg Unicomplex, a place that Voyager had travelled to on many occasions, therefore it’s sensor logs were full of information about this region of space.
It is a strategic location within close proximity of a number of alien cultures such as the Voth and the ruins of the Primary Borg Unicomplex, but also due it being fairly central in the quadrant, it is within warp distance of most of the key political powers. The system is some 63,000 light years from Earth.
On the 12th January 2381 the Federation Council finally approved funding for the creation of United Federation Starfleet to set up a Delta Quadrant colony. Plans were made for a two-phase journey through the now named "Khittomer Wormhole" during March and June, the next two occasions when the wormhole would spawn.
Many Federation construction facilities were utilised as an intensive UFS shipbuilding program began, including the manufacture of Cascade Station on Earth prior to transport to the Delta Quadrant where it was assembled in orbit of Pinastri Prime.
On March 25th 2381 the initial phase of colony ships, Escorts, scientists, engineers and Marines under the temporary command of Admiral Brice Campbell, journeyed through the wormhole to the Pinastri to begin colonisation.
A little over 2 months later on 1st June 2381 the second phase fleet of Starships, Transports and Freighters under the command of Admiral Mike Calhoun, departs for the Delta Quadrant.

Requirements To Join UF Starfleet
In order to have your application accepted, you must meet the following criteria: <br\>
- You must be at least 1 month old on SECOND LIFE, from the date of your application is submitted, with the exception of:
- You have "Payment Info Used" or "Payment Info On File" on your SECOND LIFE account.
- Your application needs to be COMPLETELY and CORRECTLY filled out. Incomplete or improperly filled out applications WILL BE DENIED
- You are NOT part of any group founded by a person who has been banned in SECOND LIFE, from a sim and/or group for GRIEFING. This rule is set in an attempt to keep our environment free of any type of conflicts, being social or work-related.
<br\> Once your application is accepted, you will be required to take and pass courses at United Federation Starfleet Academy to further indoctrinate you into what United Federation Starfleet is, our rules and regulations as well as at least one course in the department that you wish assignment to. <br\> Only upon completion of these requirements you will be offered membership in United Federation Starfleet, issued a uniform and assigned to your department of choice. To ensure that you are enjoying the best Star Trek experience that United Federation Starfleet can bring you, we encourage a minimum of interest, commitment and effort from our entry-level members in completing the required Academy training, which will take a minimum of 4 weeks. Keep that in mind when submitting your application. Once graduated, United Federation Starfleet Academy offers a wide and ever growing curriculum of classes and fields of study. By completing all of the coursework for a given College you can attain a degree in that field of study! <br\>
Career Paths and Advancement
Upon your application to UFS Membership, you are given 3 career choices :
- Civilian Track
- Enlisted Member Track
- Commissioned Officer Track
Civilian Track
When choosing the Civilian Track, you will become a UFS Citizen. As any citizen you have your rights and responsabilites mainly being :
- act and behave in a manner which will only bring credit to the group and to himself/herself.
- take part in group activities
- help the group by bringing your skills (being a shop keeper, DJ or Host at an event,barista or bartender,journalists,etc)
Enlisted Track
Enlisted members make up the majority of the United Federation Starfleet's personnel. These are the men and women who carry out the majority of the specialized work, and keep the UFS going. An enlisted individual concentrates their knowledge in a few specific skill applications, whereas an officer has a very broad overview of his job.
The Enlisted Member will follow the guidelines as stated at the UF Starfleet Academy Curriculum Guidelines for Enlisted Track.
Commissioned Officer Track
To become a Commissioned Officer, a member should successfully complete the full requirements for the completion of the UFS Academy training as started in the UF Starfleet Academy Curriculum Guidelines.
Assignment To A Branch
Upon graduation from UF Starfleet Academy, newly-commissioned officers or enlisted members will choose their career path: <br\>
- Assignment aboard of a starship : you will be stationed, in a position of your choice, according to your Division.
- Assignment to UF Starfleet Headquarters as a part of your Branch staff or another UFS station or facility.
<br\> Officers are to be assigned to ONE Branch only but interaction with other Branches or Divisions for projects and activities is encouranged.
The UFS Academy Exception
At any time, any member of any Branch may assume a position within UFS Academy (Dean, Professor or Instructor with the exception of a UFS Academy Command position).
The member holding dual positions (within your original Branch AND the Academy Branch) must make sure that:
- Activites from both Branches do not interfere with one another
- Reporting is done to the commanding officer of your original Branch
- Uniforms of the orginal Branch must continue to be worn
A member who has the UFS Academy as its ONLY Branch is required to report to UFS Academy Command and wear the correspondent uniform of that Branch.
This exception gives UFS Academy Staff, with the exception of UFS Academy Command, the opportunity to serve aboard any of the UFS Ships of the Line or at another UFS facility.
Transferring Tracks
If you are an Enlisted Member interested in following the Officer Track instead :
Contact the Academy Vice-Commandant who will:
- Invite you back to the UFS Academy Groups if needed
- Assign you to a Cadet Company if you are not assigned to one
- Review your Academy records and decide which Period of the Academy training for Commissioned Officer you fit in
- Will authorize your use of the position of 'Warrant Officer' in your flip title until graduation
- Will contact the Command Master Chief with the update of your status
After the requirements above are fulfilled, you can proceed your Academy training and become a Commissioned Officer

Unless one requests to become an enlisted crewman, each member of UF Starfleet is commissioned at the rank of Ensign upon graduation from UF Starfleet Academy. Exceptions are made in the following circumstances:
Ranks and Billets
Ranks and promotions in UF Starfleet are imaginary and are meant to be used as signs of recognition of participation and services rendered. A rank does not give any member any rights beyond that. <br\>
Ranks and positions are two distinct terms. No matter where you are stationed at, starship,stations or any facility, you may be the commanding officer of said unit however your rank prevails and that is how you should be addressed, with the exception of a roleplaying stituation. <br\> Example : <br\> A starship captain with the rank of Lieutenant and the position of Captain or be in charge of a station with an Ensign rank and the position of Station Commander. <br\> During roleplaying situation, the said officer may be called Captain or Commander which is their POSITION. While not on relevant roleplaying situation, the officer should be addressed by their RANK.

Promotions
Although Time In Grade (TIG) is a requirement to be granted a promotion - topic to be covered further in this handbook, having fulfilled your TIG is not the sole reason for the assignment of a new rank.
To be promoted, BESIDES Time In Grade, the following factors are considered :
- Contribution to the group
- Group Activity Attendance
- Adding a voice to your division and the group
- Being helpful and offering leadership to subordinates
- Cheerfully accepting tasks
- Setting a good example in your actions and appearance
Although promotion guidelines are used in most cases, the Commander-in-Chief,UFS is free to hand out promotions as needed, and can bypass these guidelines if he/she feels special treatment is warranted.
Organizational Structure
UF Starfleet is structured into various operational branches. These form the framework of our organizational structure. An officer or enlisted may belong to only one branch at a time (see 'The UFS Academy Exception' rule) but any member may be stationed on a Starship, be a volunteer for the Charities and Events committee and Inter-Branch projects or as an instructor for UF Starfleet Academy regardless of their primary duty branch.
The Branches are structured as follows:
Command
Headed by the Commander-in-Chief,UFS and Vice-Commander,UFS. Members in this Branch are responsible for the administration and background of the group, they work hard so you can play hard. Joining this Branch is upon invitation only.
Operations
Headed by the UFS Head of Operations, this branch is responsible for the management of the day-to-day activities of UFS in what concerns to personnel administration, communication issues, Fleet Deployment, and other supporting services.
Strategic Operationsis the internal division of Operations in charge of coordinating and managing the missions of the UFS Ships of the Line. Members joining this division may become Captains of Starships and along with their crews, live aboard Starships or aboard any of our stations or other facilities to lead a life of adventure and discovery.
Communications is an internal division of Operations, headed by the Head of Communications, UFS, is responsible for the issuing of press releases, announcements, the UF Starfleet newsletter, maintaining a real life web presence of the group, forum maintenance,etc.
Personnel, another internal division of Operations, is responsible for maintaining a concise and complete biographical database of the membership, processing of transfers and discharges and managing Service Jackets updates and all Personnel-related matters. The Head of the UFS Personnel division reports directly to the UFS Head of Operations.
Support Services is also an internal division of Ops, who is called the "think tank" of the group and is responsible to get feedback from the group in monthly meetings and activites about issues that need to be worked, new things and policies that need to be created or revised, etc. This division is also resposible for the Civilian Affairs of the group.
The following UF Starfleet Branches report directly to UFS Operations:
Engineering
Headed by the Head of Engineering, UF Starfleet, is composed by the builders/creators of the group, responsible for building and maintaining all structures, craft, weaponry, etc. within the group. Research and Development, Advanced Starship Design Bureau and Sim Design are just a few of the divisions under this Branch.
Medical
Headed by the Head of Medical, UF Starfleet, is responsible for the physical and mental well being of all members within the group. Emergency Medicine, Medical Training and Mentoring are a few of the Divisions under this Branch.
Science
Headed by the Head of Science, UF Starfleet, is responsible for handling all scientific endeavors within United Federation Starfleet. Life Sciences, Evolutionary Sciences and Physical Sciences are a few of the divisions under this Branch.
Security
Headed by the Head of Security, UF Starfleet, is responsible for maintaining the overall security of all UF Starfleet Areas, enforcing rules and regulations within the sim, including the authority to ban griefers and troublemakers from any and all UF Starfleet Areas as well as writing incident reports of any and all incidents.
Intelligence is a division within the UFS Security Branch, headed by the Head of UF Starfleet Intelligence, has as its primary mission to collect, evaluate, and disseminate foreign threats to the UFS group and to assist UFS leadership in making decisions relating to the SIM's and the members security.
UF Starfleet Academy
Headed by the Superintendent, UF Starfleet Academy, is the primary training facility for United Federation Starfleet. Prospective officers apply to the academy and are required to complete specialized coursework and simulator training.
Once graduated from the Academy they are eligible to be commissioned officers or enlisted members of United Federation Starfleet. Officers joining this branch will become Professors and will be working towards the intellectual development of our officers and cadets.
Marines
Headed by the Commandant, UFS Marine Corps, this is the branch of the "ground pounders" of the group, assigned to assist the Fleet in matters of defense, security and ceremonial.
Personnel who desire to join the Marines are still required to meet the same requirements and follow the same rules as any other member of United Federation Starfleet in addition to the rules and requirements of the Marines. Members who elect to pursue this avenue will still be required to complete the basic entry courses through the United Federation Starfleet Academy prior to being added to the Marines group.

- The Borg Collective collapsed, due to the infection delivered by future Janeway. Borg Tribes emerged.

- The Klingon Empire agrees to make the planet Remus and the Remans their protectorate. After a failed attempt at Reman colonization of a continent on Romulus, the Remans are eventually relocated to the Klingon planet of Klorgat VII.
- Scientific studies identify the anomaly as a wormhole that spawns at random, anywhere within a 20,000 light year radius. Ongoing scientific studies result in being able to predict where and when the wormhole would next appear. It is also discovered that whilst it opened randomly this side, the far side remained at a stable, permanent location in the Delta Quadrant.
- Starfleet also soon realise that the length of time between each opening of the wormhole gets greater between each event. This means that opportunities for future travel between the Alpha Quadrant and Delta Quadrant would become more and more limited as time progressed, as the wormhole would open less frequently. Starfleet recognises that any colony in the Delta Quadrant would need to be totally self sufficient
