The Wasp-class starship was a class of cruiser in Starfleet service beginning in 2174.
The class was created in response to warp core breaches befalling Daedalus-class starships. When the successor class was announced in 2169, specifications included a command hull impulse drive, emergency hull separation to 5,000 kilometers within five minutes, and relocation of all essential ship functions — except the warp core and antimatter containment — to the spherical command hull.
The lead ship of the class, USS Wasp, was launched in December 2173 and commissioned the following November.
A total of 15 Wasp-class vessels were built. USS Kearsarge, after its decommissioning in 2217, was put on display at the Starfleet Museum, Sol. (The Starfleet Museum)
