Doctor Zefram Cochrane was a human scientist and engineer, known as the inventor of Earth's warp drive in the mid-21st century. He is one of the most important figures in both human and Federation history. (TOS: "Metamorphosis"; Star Trek: First Contact; TNG novel: Federation)

- The novelization for Star Trek: First Contact suggests 2013, which would explain his appearance in the film.
In cooperation with Cochrane, the six extant L-5 colonies participated in a test of a stable subspace field in 2058. However, due to an unknown factor, all six disappeared and were presumed destroyed. (The Lost Era novel: The Sundered)
On 05 April 2063, Cochrane and Lily Sloane launched the first successful warpflight test from Bozeman, Montana, using elements of a Titan missile. (Star Trek: First Contact)

- 87 is the age recounted by Cochrane to James T. Kirk and an Enterprise shuttlecraft party, but if the 2013 birth year is held, he was 106 years of age.

While the Vulcans tried to confine Terran space exploration, after 2063, to the Sol system, Cochrane and several friends and colleagues mounted a clandestine expedition to the Alpha Centauri system, aboard Bonaventure, in 2064.
